British Columbia and Vancouver Island #1

The 1859 2 1/2d dull rose issue of British Columbia and Vancouver Island. An imperforate margin strip of six from the bottom of the pane. The serial number “147” shows that this plate was the 147th surface-printed plate made by De La Rue & Co. since 1855. This unique strip was removed from the only known complete sheet which is in the collection of the British Postal Museum. It is unknown how this strip came about being removed but it has been suggested that the piece may have been a gift to one of the members of The Royal Family. This was one of the gems found in the Gerald Wellburn collection.
